"The kingdom of God or nothing." I have always loved that phrase. It started out the first day I entered the field. I walked into our apartment and there I read a sign unevenly tapered (clearly done by elders) that said, "the kingdom of God or nothing" above our door. Ever since then it has always been tucked in my mind, but now more than ever it has so much more significance. I use to think a good disciple of Christ was someone who went to church, someone who read their scriptures, someone who seemed to being doing all that they should, but I have learned out here that that is not always a true disciple of Christ. A true disciple of Christ is someone who puts God first and ALL things else second. This has been on my mind a lot recently. I came across a scripture in my reading of el Libro de Mormon this week that I want to share, "But seek ye first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things shall be added unto you." (3 Nephi 13:33) Why is it so simple, yet so hard? The struggle is so real. Think of the rich young servant who had everything, yet wouldn't forsake it to follow Christ? Clearly, I am not a billionaire nor do I have "great possessions" to give to a lot of people, but if there is one thing I have learned on my mission it's to be humble. Be humble and then everything else falls into place. When we are humble we are obedient. When we are humble we will put things of the Lord first before ourselves... When we are truly humble we will then be able to say "the kingdom of a God or nothing". That's something I am going to be better at being this week-- being more humble.
Ok so there is this one Mexican family here who are the coolest! Alex DeLeon, did you ever realize just how cool your culture is? Well, these little Mexicanos are converts of a few years now and we went and stopped by this past week. I don't know if I ever mentioned how when I was in this area for the first time months ago I had the spiciest pepper of my life, or so I thought. I was wrong. We went this week and I for real had the spiciest pepper of my life. My lips and tongue went numb, even the tortillas I ate afterwards seemed to be spicy. It was horrifying. Which also reminds me, we had an FHE with this Mexican family and two others this week. Yes, we had carne asada and homemade refried beans afterwards. It was the best! They passed around some Mexican lollipops before the meeting, which were obviously also spicy, and there was this 10 month old baby sucking away...... The dad looks over at us and says, "yeah, that's a real Mexican boy." Hahahaha we were laughing so hard. They start them young here, I am pretty sure they are born sucking on a jalapeño.
Hermana Grubs turned 22!! You can bet your bottom dollar we celebrated. "Always a reason a celebrate" right? We had Colombian burgers, which were the bomb diggity. I love Colombia, I really do, but they don't have a thing on in-n-out. Speaking of Colombia, we bought jerseys last week.... It was a dream come true moment.
Nothing else new happened this week. The alarm in the mornings seemed to be able to pierce my earholes, but other than that it was a great week!
Lots of love from the sunshine state,
Hermana Brooks
